Des Moines Area Community College, Ankeny

Every other year, Iowa arts educators, teaching artists and others gather to share ideas and discuss new ways to teach all kinds of fine art forms, including dance, media arts, music, theater and visual arts both within and beyond traditional K-12 classrooms.

The 2023 Iowa Fine Arts Education Summit will focus on the Iowa Fine Arts Standards and their connections to:

  • student achievement
  • social and emotional learning
  • arts integration
  • diversity, equity and inclusion
  • school and community collaboration
Susan Riley

This year’s event will feature a keynote address by Susan Riley, founder and CEO of The Institute for Arts Integration and STEAM. Susan’s groundbreaking work in arts integration and STEAM education has been showcased by The US Department of Education, Edutopia, EducationWeek, and National Public Radio, as well as many others. She focuses on supporting teachers and leaders who are integrating the arts to help transform the educational model. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from the prestigious Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ and a Master of Science in Education Administration from McDaniel College in Westminster, MD.

In Susan’s keynote address entitled Hidden in Plain Sight: Using Creativity to Transform Education, she will share examples of how connecting our curriculum through the arts standards can be a pathway to achieving our most pressing and significant educational challenges. From addressing student achievement gaps to community collaboration, the arts offer an access point through which everyone can participate.
